I’m seriously contemplating a waist spoiler for the Forester. I managed to find a genuine OEM accessory, pre-painted, for a fairly reasonable price.
This is the piece in question (an example, anyway, as this one isn’t the right color). It is purely cosmetic, and serves no other purpose (nobody was accusing an otherwise stock 2.5X of being a performance car, anyway). It’s not RICE if it’s ( mostly ) tasteful, right ?
My only reservations are whether it looks too tacked on, and whether it will look weird without the top spoiler. Mine doesn’t have the top spoiler, and I can’t seem to find a picture in that combination (and none in Sage Green).
It would certainly look unique, but would it look good?

I read the title as “Late Night Onion Seeking,” so I’m just gonna follow through.

That’s why I’m seeking opinions.

My vote: Get it. The worst thing that can happen is that you want the top spoiler after the fact.

I like this vote.

My opinion: It will look odd without the top spoiler. It will do decent job of hiding dents and dings in that area, though, should they accumulate.

The piece that the waist spoiler covers is plastic anyway, so it doesn’t really dent.
The top spoiler does seem to tie the look together. Worst case, I could always get the top spoiler later...

1. Yay to any car that’s green automatically.
2. I can imagine this also looking good if your car is a color and both your spoilers are silver or some other contrasting color.
3. I did not know this was a thing and now I think all cars need waist spoilers.

I like that. It’s subtle enough that I didn’t even notice it right away on the first picture. EDIT: I actually slightly dislike the top spoiler. But you could get the waist spoiler by itself and see how you like it.

I think that’s what I’m going to do (waist spoiler only).

Meh.
In the included photos it looks tacked on. By your own admission it’s purely cosmetic. If it were longer and actually did something (if only keeping snow off the bumper and license plate) it’d possibly get a pass, but honestly it takes an otherwise inoffesive and arguably handsome wagon and adds that little extra clue that it’s not stock, and is desirous of extra attention, possibly the unwanted kind.
Admittedly I’m not much of a fan of that location of spoilers/extra body pieces, and Pontiac/Toyota kind of ruined them with the special edition Vibe/Matrix that had them:

Can you bolt the top spoiler right onto the SH? I was thinking about one for my base SJ, but apparently the tailgate stamping for the XT’s is slightly different to accommodate the spoiler. You can do it, but it required a good deal of filling with silicone. If you think that you might want the top spoiler too, I would check that out.
The waist spoiler itself is pretty cool. I had no idea these were a thing that you could get from Subaru.

That Vibe looks terrible!
Those are all valid points. This would be a lot easier if I could see one in person, or at least find a picture in the right color. I think I still want to get it, but I’m going to sit on the idea until winter is over.

We never got them in the US, either.

I’ve always liked the look of the waist spoiler on the GF Impreza. The busy look suits Subarus well.

I believe the top spoiler is a direct bolt on. I can’t seem to find where it says the top spoiler for the SJ isn’t, either. Parts.Subaru.com shows that the spoiler is compatible with all trim levels. My mom’s SJ came with a spoiler, and her’s is a 2.5i Limited.
The waist spoiler was a Japan only option, I believe. Japan got a lot of cool stuff that the US didn’t, including the full body kit (we only got the front under spoiler).

Ooh I forgot the non-turbo limited SJ has a spoiler too. I saw that it was supposed to be comparable but people over at subaruforester.org we’re having issues with the fit. Might not be the case with the SH, I would just check a build thread first before buying.
Is there a good place to go looking for JDM-only accessories?

That’s interesting about the spoiler fit issues. I’ll have to look into that, since I’m curious. I’m not aware of issues with the SH.
I’ve been looking at
Japanparts.com
, but I’ve never ordered anything from them.
